Rigid Sigmoidoscopy

This is an examination using a short illuminating telescope. The doctor introduces some air into the bowel at the same time, so that that the scope can be moved forwards. This procedure is frequently performed in the out patient clinic. You do not need any preparation beforehand. It gives good views of the rectum and if necessary biopsies can be taken (painless removal of a small piece of tissue).
