Dr Ian Geh MBBS MRCP FRCR
Consultant in Oncology & Radiotherapy.

Dr Ian GehIan Geh graduated from the University College Hospital (UCH), University of London in 1988. Following his house officer posts at UCH and Middlesex Hospitals, he completed his Senior House Officer training in General Medicine at St Bartholomew’s and Homerton Hospitals. He then undertook registrar training in Clinical Oncology at Middlesex, Royal Free, Mount Vernon, Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals. In 1998 he won the British Oncological Association Young Investigator’s Award for a project he completed on chemoradiotherapy treatment of rectal cancers. He was appointed as Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Queen Elizabeth and at the Heartlands Hospitals, Birmingham in 1999, specialising in the treatment of bowel (gastrointestinal or GI) cancers. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. He is involved in research in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers and is a Member of the National Cancer Research Institute Upper GI Clinical Trials Group. He is co-investigator of the SCOPE-1 trial for oesophageal cancer. He has published extensively in the medical literature and lectures regularly at National and International Cancer Conferences. He is the Lead Oncologist for the Pan-Birmingham Cancer Network Upper and Lower GI site-specific group. He is an active non-surgical member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland.


Mr Tariq Ismail MB BCh MD (Distinc.) FRCS
Consultant Colorectal Surgeon

Tariq Ismail

Tariq Ismail trained at the Wales National School of Medicine in Cardiff. He obtained his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1986 and did his training in the West Midlands. He did a clinical sabbatical at the National Cancer Institute in Tokyo before being appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery at University of Birmingham. He was a Sheldon Fellow for 2 years which led to the award of MD with Distinction. He has published widely on translational research in proteomics, gene therapy and biomarkers for colorectal cancer. His research team have received a number of awards including The Arderne Gold Medal by the Royal Society of Medicine, Syme Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and the Digestive Diseases Prize by the Association of Coloproctology. He was pivotal in introducing CT colonography, Video Capsule Endoscopy (“Pill Cam”) and laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Birmingham. He has also played a key role in developing colorectal referral pathways and enhanced surgical recovery protocols. He has been Surgical Tutor, Chair of the Pan Birmingham Cancer Network Colorectal Group, clinical service lead for the Endoscopy Unit and Gastrointestinal Surgery. He is currently an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.


Dr Ian McCafferty Bsc MBBS MRCP FRCR
Consultant Radiologist

Dr Ian McCaffertyIan McCafferty graduated from the University College & Middlesex Hospital in 1989. After completing his house officer posts he travelled and worked in Australia for 6 months. On his return he completed a Senior House Officer training in General Medicine obtaining full Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1993. He undertook registrar radiology training in the West Midlands obtaining full Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 1996. Following completion of subspecialty training he took up a fellowship in interventional radiology in Oxford returning to the West Midlands to take up the post of Consultant Radiologist at University Hospital Birmingham Foundation Trust. As a Consultant he has developed interests in interventional and oncology radiology (specifically related to the Urogenital & Colorectal disorders). He has introduced and developed new imaging techniques for colon disorders with a special interest CT of the colon, including CT Colonography. He is a member of the national radiology special interest group for gastrointestinal imaging and the British Society of Interventional Radiology. He is involved in several national trials relating to colorectal imaging.


Mr Simon Radley MBCHB MD FRCS
Consultant Colorectal Surgeon

Simon RadleySimon Radley graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1985 with Honours in Surgery. Having completed his house officer posts in Birmingham he became a lecturer in anatomy at the University of Birmingham. Following Senior House Officer training he undertook a period of research into colorectal cancer and submitted a thesis for which he was awarded an MD by the University of Birmingham. He undertook registrar surgical training in general and colorectal surgery in the West Midlands. He completed specialist training in colorectal surgery at St Marks Hospital in London. During this time he also undertook an overseas travelling fellowship, having been awarded grants from the International College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of England, to the USA to study treatments for rectal cancer. On completion of his training he took up a post as Senior Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery at Birmingham University and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, becoming an NHS Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in April 2002. He has published widely on colorectal disease and in particular functional bowel disorders. He has been the Clinical Service Lead for Gastro-intestinal Surgery at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He has had a key role in introducing laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced surgical recovery protocols to University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and to the Priory Hospital. He is currently the West Midlands Chapter Representative and is a Council Member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland.


Dr Phillipe Taniere
Consultant in Histopathology

Dr Phillipe TanierePhilippe Taniere graduated from the University Of Lyon, France, in 1990. He became a Specialist Registrar in Histopathology in 1991, and graduated in Histopathology in 1995. Between 1995 and 1998, he was a lecturer “Assistant des Hopitaux Universitaires” at the University Hospital E. Herriot and Heart/Lung University Hospital, Lyon. He then became a research fellow in the Unit of Molecular Carcinogenesis at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon. He completed his PhD in 2002, titled “Molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis in upper gastrointestinal carcinomas, implication of TP53 gene”. In 2000, he became “Maitre de Conferences des Universites-Praticien Hospitalier” at the University Hospital E. Herriot and University of Lyon with a special interest in Gastrointestinal, Pancreato-biliary and Urological pathology. In 2002, he was appointed as Consultant in Histopathology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Medical School, Birmingham, with a special interest in gastro-intestinal and pancreatico-biliary pathology.
