Mr Tariq Ismail features in "Talking Health" Magazine about bowel cancer screening test

Mr Tariq Ismail features in the summer edition of BMI Healthcare's summer edition of "Talking Health" magazine

The article highlights the importance of flexible sigmoidoscopy screening, which takes between only five to ten minutes to perform and allows the consultant to examine the lining of the lower bowel, enabling the consultant to and identify any small growths (which are known as polyps) and if left untreated some polyps can become cancerous

In April 2010 medical journal The Lancet. reported that the development of a one- off bowel screening test could reduce deaths from the disease by 40%.
In many cases of bowel cancer, the cancer develops from the polyp in the bowel that grows and becomes malignant. The flexible sigmoidoscopy test can enable consultants to diagnose polyps at an earlier age which could reduce the chances of developing bowel cancer. During the procedure if polyps are found they can be immediately removed through the same scope by burning them lightly or cutting them off, which only takes a few minutes.

If several polyps are found or if the polyps are large, the patient can be referred for a further examination called colonoscopy to ensure there are no additional polyps or growths anywhere else in the bowel.

The Birmingham Bowel Clinic is able to provide advise on bowel cancer screening. This test is available at the Birmingham Bowel Clinic with minimal waiting times. For more information please call in confidence on 0845 241 7762, or click here to submit an enquiry by email.
